Beloved brethren, sports and physical activities, when rightly guided, can be powerful tools for health, fellowship, and evangelism. God created the body as well as the soul, and Scripture reminds us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Caring for the body through exercise honors God.
The church’s involvement in sports promotes healthy living, discipline, teamwork, and self-control—values that align with Christian character. Sports help our youth develop confidence, positive relationships, and resilience, while providing a safe and godly environment away from harmful influences.
Sports also open doors for evangelism and community outreach. Through friendly competitions, church leagues, and sports outreach programs, the church can connect with people who may never attend a worship service. Christ’s method of mingling with people and meeting them where they are applies even in recreation.
However, as a church, we must ensure that sports never replace worship, Sabbath reverence, or spiritual priorities. All activities should reflect Christian conduct, modesty, respect, and fairness. When sports are balanced with prayer, Bible study, and service, they become instruments for both physical wellness and spiritual growth.
